VAT (Value Added Tax) is a consumption tax applied to goods and services at each stage of the supply chain. In Africa, VAT rates vary by country: Nigeria 7.5%, Ghana 12.5%, Kenya 16%, South Africa 15%. Businesses registered for VAT can charge VAT on their sales and claim back VAT on their purchases.
To add VAT to a net price in Nigeria: multiply the net price by 7.5% to get the VAT amount, then add it to the net price. For example, a ₦10,000 product becomes ₦10,750 including VAT. To remove VAT from a gross price: divide by 1.075 to find the net price.
Adding VAT calculates the total price including tax from a net (pre-tax) amount. This is useful when setting prices. Removing VAT extracts the pre-tax amount from a gross (tax-inclusive) price. This is useful when calculating input VAT claims or understanding the tax component of a price.
VAT registration thresholds vary by country. In Nigeria, registration is mandatory if annual turnover exceeds ₦25 million. In Kenya, the threshold is KES 5 million. In South Africa, it is ZAR 1 million. Below these thresholds, you may not need to charge VAT, but voluntary registration can allow you to claim input VAT.
If you are VAT-registered, your prices should be quoted excluding VAT (net) for B2B sales, as businesses can claim back the VAT. For B2C sales, prices are typically quoted including VAT (gross). Always clarify whether your prices are inclusive or exclusive of VAT to avoid confusion with customers.

VAT Rates Across Africa

  • Nigeria: 7.5% — One of the lowest VAT rates in Africa. Applies to most goods and services except basic food items, medical supplies, and educational materials.
  • Ghana: 12.5% — Standard VAT rate plus a 2.5% National Health Insurance Levy (NHIL) and 1% Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) levy.
  • Kenya: 16% — Standard VAT rate with exemptions for basic food, agricultural supplies, and medical services.
  • South Africa: 15% — Standard VAT rate with zero-rated items including basic food, petrol, and paraffin.

  • Nigeria: Mandatory if annual turnover exceeds ₦25 million
  • Ghana: Mandatory if annual turnover exceeds GHS 200,000
  • Kenya: Mandatory if annual turnover exceeds KES 5 million
